The first edition, first issue, with page vi is misnumbered ii, page 1 line 21 with the misspelling auctoineers.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, and fifteen plates, by Arthur Layard. Collated complete.

This entertaining story follows a British adventurer seeking wealth in the wilds of Africa, finding romance, and discovering a lost race and its monstrous god. Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was an English author who specialised in adventure fiction set in exotic locations, primarily Africa. He was a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. 

With a twenty-four page publishers catalogue to the rear.


CONDITION

In the publishers original cloth binding. Externally, very smart with minor bumping to head and tail of spine. Three minor perforations (wood worm?) to rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with the odd spot. Slight tears to pages 250-252 and 254-255.
