DESCRIPTION
A collection of three novels by Charles Dickens.
The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, published in 1862, a later reprint. The Pickwick Papers is Dickens first novel, and was originally written in serial form.
The novel is a sequence of loosely connected adventures and characters, occurring between 1827 and 1828. The character Sam Weller became well known for his popular humour.
Illustrated with a frontispiece, vignette title page, and forty-one plates. Collated, complete.
Dombey and Son, undated, an first edition later impression, published by Chapman and Hall but with no date to the title page. Issue points present; the vignette title shows the hook on Captain Cuttles left arm rather than his right; no quotation marks around the word party to page XV line 2; delight rather than joy to page 284 5 lines up from the bottom; ; and fidgetty for fidgety on page 26 on line 11. Issue points as stated by John C. Eckel in his 1913 publication The First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens.
Illustrated with a frontispiece, vignette title page, and thirty-eight plates. Collated, complete.
‘Dombey and Son’ is about Paul Dombey, the owner of a shipping company, who intends to pass down ownership of his company to his son, ignoring his daughter, Florence. The novel tells the story of their family, and their hopes and fears.
David Copperfield, undated, an early edition published by Chapman and Hall but with no date to the title page. Issue points present; chapter XXVII is on page 282 rather than 283 as listed in the contents. The plate facing page 482 is not a dark plate.
This novel is considered by many to be Dickens masterpiece, and Dickens himself referred to the book as being his favourite child. As it was written in the middle of his career, it has been considered to be the turning point of his novels, and with it you can see the separation between his novels of youth and maturity.
Illustrated with a frontispiece, vignette title page, and thirty-eight plates. Collated, complete.
Dickens is one of the most popular authors of the Victorian age. His novels show the grimy side of poverty and prosperity in Victorian England, showing poor social conditions alongside repulsive characters.
Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne, most often known by his pen-name Phiz. As Phiz, he illustrated many of Dickens novels, including David Copperfield, Dombey and Son, and Bleak House, as well as illustrating for Punch throughout his life.
Bookplate of Thomas Glazebrook Rylands to the front paste down of Pickwick.
