Déhanché par le sac trop bourré quil porte à lépaule, le vagabond au masque de Pierrot lunaire avance en titubant sur le trottoir. Son nom : Bébert. Son âge : trente-cinq, quarante ? Voici que dans sa poitrine soudain trop étroite le coeur semballe. Encore une crise ? La brume de novembre étouffe la petite ville de lEst où la conduit, en fraude, un wagon de marchandises parti à laube de Paris. Avant de devenir un sans-domicile-fixe, Bébert a été Gilbert, un garçon doux, sensible et fin, grandi entre un père, Luc, et une mère, Cécile, attentifs et aimants. Luc dabord, Cécile ensuite sont morts, peut-être un peu trop tôt, surtout pour un jeune homme qui semblait porter en lui la rupture et léchec. Des illusions au chômage, de la boisson à la rue, Bébert la emporté sur Gilbert. Il va, pour la première fois depuis des années, grâce à la générosité dun passant de la ville inconnue, coucher cette nuit dans une vraie chambre et un vrai lit, à lhôtel de la Gare.

Par un sursaut que rien ne laissait prévoir, il ne boira pas de vin ce soir. Défilent dans sa tête, entre deux crises qui lui tordent le cour, les images de lenfant amoureux de poésie et de fables, celles de Fanny, la jeune fille en casquette sous les marronniers en fleur, leurs vacances au bord de lOcéan, avant la rupture et léchec.

Comme les précédents romans de Marilène Clément, dont lun a reçu le prix Charles Veillon et deux ont été adaptés à la télévision, celui-ci reflète un problème familial et social actuel, raconté avec une sobriété et une gravité qui ne vont pas sans humour, poésie et tendresse.
