About this book: In the years preceding the First World War, the spa resort of Evian-les-Bains, experiencing a boom at that time, became the subject of the contrasting and complementary points of view of two amateur photographers. Skilled in the technique of stereoscopy, which allowed images to be reproduced in relief, they captured landscapes, scenes of everyday life, festivals and moments of family intimacy on glass plates. The first of these two photographers, a well-known figure in Evian, favoured subjects such as the life of the town and the villages in the surrounding countryside. The second, a member of the high society that spent the summers in the area, recorded first and foremost the beauty of Lake Geneva and the delights of holidaying in the privileged setting of the Villa Bassaraba dAmphion, the childhood home of the poet Anna de Noailles. Bringing together 200 previously unpublished photographs from the municipal collections, as important culturally and ethnographically as they are artistically, the inaugural exhibition at the Maison Gribaldi and the accompanying catalogue succeed in capturing the atmospher and spirit of the Belle Epoque
